Lahore
April 8- May 7, 2006
with Shahram Entekhabi, Asma Mundrawala, Nilofer Akmut, Anup Mathew Thomas & Awena Cozannet
The first Vasl International Artists’ Residency to take place in Lahore was aimed at creating a platform for the exchange of ideas through the multiple practices of the participating artists. By working together in a close proximity for a sustained period of time, the 5 artists created personal exchange of ideas, information, and cultural understanding, contributing towards building art and culture in Pakistan. The International Artists Workshop in January 2007 was also aimed at projecting Lahore’s culture with the international contemporary art circles, highlighting the city’s rich history and architecture.
Anup Mathew
On the 18th of April 2006, Indian Artist Anup Mathew Thomas entered the NCA library after closing hours, where he placed 13 catalogues of his work titled “Well Basically This is about Thomas Jacob”. Each of the 13 catalogues was inscribed individually for artists who are currently teaching at the NCA.
Most of the catalogues have since disappeared from the library. It is difficult to ascertain how the catalogues have left the library. It could be the work of the students, teachers or other visitors to the library or the authorities who found them.
There are 16 cameras installed in the NCA library to deter acts of vandalism or theft.
On the 4th of May 2006, the Artist found one of the catalogues in an artist’s studio, who had been informed during casual conversation earlier that a catalogue had been left for him in the NCA library. However, this artist had picked up a copy that was inscribed for another artist, since he could not find the one that was in his name.
